T1. Definition of specifications
Leader: ENAGÁS
Participants: AMES, ESTAMP, ROVAL, H2GREEM, EXOLUM, NANO4, H2SITE
The main objective is to ensure that the new generation of PEM electrolyzers and the storage of the generated hydrogen, either in the form of organic liquids or injected into the natural gas network, meets the specifications and requirements necessary for the decarbonization objectives set at the national level.
To achieve this overall goal, the following specific objectives are proposed:
- Defining the requirements for innovative components and designing the new generation of PEM electrolyzers.
- Defining the main characteristics for the efficient storage of green hydrogen in the form of organic liquids.
Defining the specifications necessary for decarbonizing the natural gas network through the injection of green hydrogen.
T2. Research into new materials, components and designs for the next generation of electrolyzers PEM
Leader: AMES
Participants:H2GREEM, ESTAMP, ROVAL, NANO4
The main objective is to investigate new materials and manufacturing processes for the development of optimized components for a new generation of PEM electrolyzers.
To achieve this overall goal, the following individual objectives are established:
- Research into materials and manufacturing processes for low-cost bipolar plates with fluid-dynamically optimized flow distribution channels, enabling new electrolyzer designs with high efficiency and durability while reducing technology costs.
- Research into materials and manufacturing processes for current collectors, with porosity-optimized designs, enabling the development of electrolyzers with greater efficiency and durability.
Research into new precursors for catalytic inks and new manufacturing processes for catalyst deposition and membrane-electrode assembly that reduce the amount of precious metals used in the electrodes, thus achieving lower investment costs for the development of next-generation PEM electrolyzers.
T3. Desarrollo de nuevos diseños de componentes para electrolizadores PEM
Leader: H2GREEM
Participants:AMES, ESTAMP, ROVAL, NANO4
The main objective is to develop new designs of electrolysis cells and stacks that will lay the design foundations for the industrial-scale manufacturing of a new generation of PEM electrolyzers, capable of generating green hydrogen at a competitive price.
T4. Hydrogen storage in the form of organic liquids
Leader: EXOLUM
Participants: H2GREEM
The main objective is to study the storage of hydrogen in liquid form using organic liquids.
To this end, the following specific objectives are proposed:
- Selection and definition of the LOHC and catalysts.
- Testing and validation of a laboratory-scale prototype of an LOHC hydrogenation-dehydrogenation system.
Technical and economic feasibility study of the LOHC systems.
T5. Decarbonization of the natural gas network through the injection of green hydrogen
Leader: ENAGÁS
Participants:H2SITE, H2GREEM
The main objective is to investigate the optimal integration of renewable electricity generation with the natural gas grid by injecting hydrogen generated by the PEM electrolyzer developed within the ‘GreenH2Pipes’ project into the natural gas network.
To this end, the technical feasibility of direct hydrogen injection into the natural gas grid will be studied, with the aim of achieving decarbonization goals. This could also be an efficient option for hydrogen storage and transport.
To this end, the following specific objectives are proposed:
- Investigation using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of the fluid dynamic behavior under different hydrogen injection conditions in the natural gas network.
- Investigation of the mechanical behavior of materials in the Spanish natural gas transport infrastructure after exposure to natural gas and hydrogen mixtures.
- Development of procedures for hydrogen sampling and impurity analysis associated with hydrogen injection into the natural gas network.
Investigation of the separation of natural gas and hydrogen mixtures transported through the gas infrastructure. Investigation using Bayesian machine scientists of the optimal integration of hydrogen generated from renewable sources into the gas network.

T6. Sustainability, recycling and life cycle analysis
Leader: ENAGÁS
Participants:AMES, EXOLUM, ESTAMP, ROVAL, H2GREEM, NANO4, H2SITE
In this task, a comparative life cycle analysis will be prepared (applying the guidelines of ISO 14040/14044 standards) to assess the environmental impact of injecting hydrogen generated by the innovative electrolyzer into the natural gas network and of the organic liquids used for liquid storage of this energy vector.
